Mark 10:21, "Jesus looked at him and loved him."
As I read those words today, they struck me in a new way. Maybe it's because I'm studying prayer and worship for one of my classes. Or maybe it's because this is simply what I needed to hear today. Either way, God used these words to speak to me.
Picture the scene.
People everywhere. Jesus is teaching and this rich man comes up to him, wanting to ask a question that could change his life. Before Jesus says anything, he simply looks at the man and loves him.
Jesus sees this man. Not as a rich man. Not as someone who interrupted him. But as simply a man who came to Jesus.
I can see Jesus' face in my mind. First, there's a look of recognition in his eyes. Then a softening of his features. A twinkle in his eye. A smile starts to form. And soon, it's like Jesus and this man are the only two people standing there.
What does it mean to be loved by Jesus? What does it mean for him to see me? To imagine him looking at me that way? Seeing me with love-filled eyes?
It's not a look of pity. It's a genuine expression of love.
Wow.
Imagine the thoughts and feelings you would experience. The love and acceptance you would feel. The desire to sit there with him for hours and just be.
That's a bit of what I felt today.
A reminder that God looks at me.
Sees me.
Loves me.
It's pretty powerful.
